What makes good design?

You know what you like, so you know what good design is right?

It’s great that clients know what they like and what they don’t like, but just because you know what you like doesn’t necessarily know what make a good piece of design. I’m not saying that all clients do this, but honestly us designers do know what we’re talking about and what makes a good piece of design.

Every designer has a different style, but we can all adapt our styles to fit with your needs. Design also follow trends of the times just look back at the Art Deco period – print, interior and furniture design all had the same style.  After researching a designer will be able to design in the right way to work within your market and for your specific target audience.

Script handwritten fonts are bang on trend at the minute, but whilst these fonts looks good if your target audience is mainly males who are after high street fashion it isn’t going make a successful piece of design. However a script handwritten font for a nail technician or for wedding stationery it’s the perfect choice. It’s not just about fonts, it’s also about colour palettes and imagery. But again just because you like orange doesn’t mean it works for your business or target audience.

Whilst script fonts are really on trend at the moment doesn’t mean it works for everything, especially not a male fashion brand!
Just changing the font to something more masculine has changed the look and feel of the design instantly.

Making the piece of design work for your business and target audience you need to listen to your designer, not just focus on what you like and what’s in fashion at the time. By listening to your designer and appreciating that they say you will build a better working relationship and be respected by them too.
