Are you Using the Right Tool for the Job?

We have a running joke in our family about using a 6” nail for everything, because my Great Grandad used to joke about using them all the time. This wouldn’t have gone down well with my Great Nana if he’d hung a picture in the lounge with one and went through to the next room! Thankfully we all knew his sense of humour.

Using the correct nail or screw for the job is the same as using the right logo format for the application. When building a brand you should look at all the places where you would need to use your logo and make sure you have all the correct formats you may need.

On a website you should have a low resolution logo at a small file size, if you uploaded all image files were high resolution your website would eventually run very slow. If you were having a large scale banner printed, you wouldn’t want to use the same logo as on your website as it would be incredibly pixelated and poor quality for print.

The following list (is not by any means conclusive) explains what different formats of logo you will need for different applications.

  • PNG – transparent background image file typically used for web applications. PNGs can also be used in print if the physical image size if large enough.
  • JPG Low Resolution – solid background image file typically used for website applications.
  • JPG High Resolution – solid background image file typically used for print applications.
  • EPS – Vector file, these are perfect file types for print as they can be scaled up and down without reducing quality.
  • SVG – transparent background image file, typically used on web applications.
  • PDF – Vector file, these are again ideal for print based applications.

When you have a logo created ensure you have all the relevant formats for the applications you will require.
